Dr. Susan H. Thompson, a cardiologist at the University of British Columbia’s University of Toronto, who was not involved in the study, said that although the study may not be conclusive, she is aware that the risk of developing heart disease increases with the number of heart attacks and strokes.
“We have known that for decades. In fact, it was never thought to be possible until a few years ago,” said Thompson. “In a small group of people who are taking this medication, we’re now seeing a significant increase in the risk of heart attack and stroke.”
Thompson added that it’s important to remember that the risk of heart disease is increased with the number of heart attacks and strokes.
“I would say that the risk of heart attack is increased when there is a history of heart disease,” said Thompson. “The risk of heart disease increases with the number of heart attacks and strokes.”
